Peruvian Court to vote on Nadine’s fate

Nadine will learn her fate in the next 20 days

LIMA- The Peruvian Court of Appeals has revealed that it will vote on whether the former first lady, Nadine Heredia, should be allowed to leave the country without previous authorization.

Supreme judges César Sahuanay Calsín, Iván Quispe Aucca and Jésica León Yarango will give their decision within the next 20 days.

Heredia is appealing against a judicial sanction that prevents her from leaving Peru or changing her place of residence without permission from a magistrate.

These restrictions were inflicted upon Nadine following her being investigated for alleged money laundering and abuse of power whilst her husband, Ollanta Humala, was president of Peru.

Lawyer for the defendant, Wilfredo Pedraza, stated that his client did not dispute the authority that the judge has in altering her rules of conduct, but is questioning the basis of the preventative measure.

“In this case, we are challenging the grounds of the decision because from our point of view they lack consistency, they don’t have the necessary weight to justify a modification of the law to one so much more penal and thus we say that our appeal has traction and a clear argument,” Pedraza told Peruvian media.

The lawyer was also quick to highlight that Heredia has been abiding fully to the restrictions placed upon her. “Mrs Heredia is fulfilling the rules of conduct imposed on her by the judge, the truth is that when she travelled and the judge asked her to return within 10 days, she returned on the sixth day.”

The tribunal also analysed the contesting appeal from Ilan Heredia Alarcó, Antonia Alarcón Cubas, Rocío del Carmen Calderón and Julio Torres Aliaga who are also being investigated for alleged money laundering.

A decision will be made in the next 20 days.
