Anti-Corruption blitz for Roman officials and businessmen

New investigation headed by the Special Anti-Corruption Unit of the Finance Guard.

ROME -- An anti-corruption blitz at the hands of the city’s Finance Guard arrests 10, including city officials and businessmen, accused of embezzlement, bribery and fraud against the State.

Following on from the maxi investigation ‘Vitruvius,’ which uncovered bribes that connected the world of politics to the world of small building contractors, a new operation called ‘System’ is underway, led by the Special Anti-Corruption Unit of the Finance Guard.

Under the lens of Public Prosecutor Erminio Amelio are contracts for maintenance works that were never executed in four different schools in the Municipio XIV (the 14th Quarter). The existence of an agreement between public and business executives, aimed at the division of resources for the work, was clearly established for around 400,000 euros.

Ten are currently under house arrest, whilst 27 are being treated as suspects for corruption and other associated charges. The Finance Guard are also carrying out searches in offices and homes, and investigators have so far seized property and sums of money equating to around one million euros.
