ROME – Italian police have arrested a 20-year-old Rom and denounced another aged 16 on charges of stealing a bag and money from a young Chinese woman student who was killed by a train as she pursued her assailants, police said Sunday. Police sources said the two and a third person being sought by officers had abandoned the student, Zhang Yao, when she was still alive after the train hit her on the rails at the Tor Sapienza station in the outskirts of Rome and that she could have been saved if the trio had called emergency services.

The two suspects were quizzed by magistrates in the office of the Rome Flying Squad and afterwards the 20-year-old man, who has a criminal record for theft, was ordered to be held in jail while the teenager was charged and released. Both are resident at a Rom camp in the via Salviati just a stone’s throw from the police immigration office were Zhang Yao had been to collect her sojourn permit and close also to the railway track where she was hit by the train, the sources said.

The three suspects were tracked down with the help of CCTV footage from a camera at a firm with premises overlooking the railway tracks.

Northern League leader Matteo Salvini sought to capitalize on the tragedy, saying that the gypsey camp at Via Salvini should be bulldozed.

“We had asked for order and a clean-up in the nomad camp,” he said, now we expect the prefect and the police chief to send in the bulldozers. The mayor (of Rome Virginia) Raggi was asleep about this also.”
