Sant'Egidio community works towards peace in Mozambique

The Community of Sant'Egidio representatives at international mediation meeting

ROME -- The Community of Sant’Egidio, a liberal catholic movement based in the Trastevere region of the Eternal City, is making progress in putting an end to armed clashes in Mozambique, after mediating an end to the civil war in 1992.

“After the 2014 elections, Mozambique is going through a period of political crisis. In recent months, violence and armed clashes between the government and the main opposition party, Renamo, have forced thousands of citizens to take refuge in neighbouring Malawi,” the Sant’Egidio Community said.

"A process of international mediation coordinated by the European Union began on July 18 in order to try and solve the current political crisis, with representatives of the Sant’Egidio Community Mario Raffaelli and don Angelo Romano.”

“Mediation efforts include 12 representatives for both the President of the Republic of Mozambique government as well as for the President of the opposition party, Renamo. These mediation attempts have achieved significant results for Mozambique which will help make way for peace.”

“Progress has been made and mediation efforts have made it possible for the Mozambique government to have its own say in negotiations, all in an attempt at decentralization.”

“A sub-committee has been created in charge of this particular job, still with the help and support of the mediation teams. This will help to create a climate of trust which is necessary for peace to be able to be established.”
