Smart car crashes near Rome, 1 dead and 2 injured

The car veered off road just before the crossing between Via Laurentina and Via Solfatara

ROME — A man died and two were injured after a 'Smart' car, designed for only two people, crashed when it veered off the Via Laurentina.

The casualty, 39-year-old Richard Ottaviani from Ardea, was crawled up in the boot behind the car’s two seats before being propelled out of the car when the boot was shattered.

Upon their arrival, emergency services immediately saw the man’s critical condition, and he died as he was in the ambulance.

The driver, aged 31, tested positive to alcohol after a breathalyser test and is now under investigation for homicide. He is now in hospital with a broken collar-bone.

The other passenger, a 41-year-old also from Ardea, was also taken to hospital and recovered overnight.

The driver will be facing a long sentence after the law on drink-driving was recently re-amended.
