A Boeing 777 coming in to land at Fiumicino Airport

ROME — A Boeing 777 flying from Chicago had to make an emergency landing in the capital’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport Thursday after experiencing problems with its hydraulic brake system, airport officials said.

The Boeing, which belongs to American company United Airlines, landed on the airport’s runway number one an hour after its scheduled arrival time, and its 121 passengers walked off the plane unscathed.

Firefighters and first-aid units were called upon in case of any further problems, after which the 777's fuel tank was emptied in the space of a few minutes.

Flight schedules across the airport remained unaffected.
