The Community of Sant'Egidio calls for a truce in Aleppo

ROME -- The Community of Sant’Egidio, a catholic movement based in the Eternal City, has made another strong plea for a truce in the city of Aleppo.
“Aleppo is on its last legs. A political agreement between the parties seems to be far away. Calls from the United Nations for a humanitarian truce remained unheeded up until this point. Aleppo, a city which symbolises the coexistence between cultures and religions, is going through the hardest period yet in its history.”
“The forces in the city are going to every length possible to obtain a victory. There needs to be a truce straight away to free the city’s inhabitants from a siege which is killing even the weakest, the sick, and the children. Priority must be given to the population, which is being deprived of everything they need the most.”
Andrea Riccardi, founder of the Community of Sant’Egidio, recently wrote “we must take into account all of the death and destruction which Aleppo has gone through. It must stop here while there is still a glimmer of hope and life in Aleppo.”
The Community goes on to say “we can’t let Aleppo die before our very eyes.”
