AMA appoints Milan accountant as new boss

AMA's new president Alessandro Solidoro

ROME -- Alessandro Solidoro has been named as the new president of AMA, the capital’s waste management organisation, following former chief Daniele Fortini’s resignation from the role on Thursday.

The Five Star Movement (M5S) chose Solidoro to take over Fortini’s role due to his expertise in matters of corporate crisis. He was previously a certified account in Milan and has been selected to assume to role of president of AMA because of his abilities to deal with companies in crisis.

“AMA has already gone bankrupt. It has a deficit of 600 million euros and that is why we have chosen someone who is an expert in companies experiencing crises,” the head of the commission, Daniele Diaco of the M5S said.

Diaco also added that Solidoro will be assisted by “general director who is an expert in issues specific to waste management” so that there will some practical knowledge behind his corporate expertise.

The city is in the middle of a rubbish crisis, with bins overflowing all over streets both in the historical centre and also in the outskirts of Rome. The waste crisis has been a particular problem for new Mayor Virginia Raggi so far, who promised to make it one of her priorities to clean up the city.

In light of the severity of the waste management crisis, it has been the council’s priority to replace outgoing Fortini as soon as possible, hence the swift appointment of Solidoro on the same day as Fortini’s departure from his role.

However, Solidoro’s lack of specific waste management related experience has caused considerable anger and controversy amongst several political figures, with Andrea de Priamo from the conservative party Fratelli d’Italia saying “you are proposing someone who is an expert in failures. Are you doing this because you want to write off AMA? We would have expected some sort of consultation or public evidence instead of this decision which has been made so blindly…”

Italy’s anti-corruption agency ANAC launched an official inquiry into AMA on Thursday, over the ongoing problems with poor management of the Eternal City’s waste, ANSA sources reported.
