Coastguard rescues 1,800 migrants

AUGUSTA — Almost 2,000 migrants were rescued in an operation headed by the Coastguard of Rome, which comprised of 16 separate missions, officials said Tuesday. 

 The migrants, numbering 1,800 in total, were found on 14 dinghies and two small boats, before being brought to the Port of Augusta in Sicily on Tuesday morning. 

 The ships involved in the rescue operation were the Fiorillo CP 904 and the Corsi CP 906 from the Coastguard, the Grecale and the Cigala Fulgosi from the Navy, and the German military ship Dattlen as part of the ‘EunavforMed’ program. 

 Also involved in the rescue were the Dignity Unit, sent by the NGO ‘Doctors Without Borders’, and the ‘Iuventa’ Unit, sent by ‘Rettet’.
