Theresa May to visit Renzi in Eternal City

New British Prime Minister Theresa May

ROME -- The new British Prime Minister, Theresa May, was due to arrive in the Eternal City Wednesday to meet with her Italian counterpart, Matteo Renzi.

Her visit to Rome marks the continuation of her tour of European chancellors, and follows her meeting last week with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel and also with the French President, François Hollande.

According to the Messaggero, Renzi, unlike his German counterpart, is not willing to grant too much time to London and to the British Government for Brexit negotiations, as he said “we are concerned with the needs of Europe, and not with those of the English,” on Saturday during the National Assembly of the Democratic Party,

Ms May hopes that her scheduled meeting with the Italian Prime Minister will demonstrate the British intention to maintain relations of “friendship and close cooperation” between the two countries, despite Brexit related uncertainties, Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore reports.
