Polish church offer sanctuary to refugees

ROME – The Community of Sant’Egidio, has welcomed with great interest the decision of the (CEP) Polish Episcopal Conference, to entrust to the organisation Caritas, the implementation of the project of humanitarian passage in Poland for Syrian refugees, a member of the CEP has confirmed.

It is viewed as an important step in the right direction towards giving aid to the multitudes of refugees in war-torn areas. Their decision is in part, based on the positive response to similar initiatives of the Community of Sant’Egidio along with the Federation of the Evangelical Church and the Italian government, where the collaboration of humanitarian aid and security, has already facilitated the arrival of over 200 Syrian and Iraqi refugees into the country.

The Community of Sant’Egidio sees this as a positive decision that serves to reinforce the way in which the Polish Church is demonstrating their commitment to serve the community in the way of Christ, consenting to save human life through offering refugees an path away from the desperate situation that currently surrounds the Mediterranean and even promise of security and flights to Europe for those escaping war-zones.

The Community of Sant’Egidio have expressed wishes that the proposal put forward by the Polish Church, is brought to fruition as soon as possible via a series of agreements with state institutions. They have also communicated the desire that the Polish church renews its appeal to all European countries to follow their example, as they believe that in such a way, integration into western society will be achieved with the greatest ease.
