SAVONA -- Cardinal Domenico Calcagno, former bishop of Savona, and now president of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, is being investigated for alleged complicity to embezzlement in the management of the Institute for the support of clergy in the diocese of Liguria.

Calcagno had given his backing to the then president of the Institute, Peter Tartarotti, along with former vice-president Gianmichele Baldi, who are both under investigation for embezzlement.

Investigators are focussing on housing investments that claimed a debt of several million.  These include a large structure near the coast in Celle Ligure which should have been transformed into a residential complex, complete with luxury hotel.
