Pope, Iraqi Prime Minister discuss Christians' plight

VATICAN CITY -- Haydar al-Abadi, the Prime Minister of Iraq had a private audience with Pope Francis to discuss the plight of embattled Christians in Iraq, Vatican sources said,
During their meeting, reference was made to the good relations between the life of the Church and the situation of Christians and other ethnic minorities and religions in Iraq. There was particular emphasis placed on the importance of their presence and the need for protection of their rights.
The importance of interreligious dialogue and the responsibility of the religious community in the promotion of tolerance and peace were also noted upon.
Following on from this, there was mention of the importance of the reconciliation process between the various social groups within the country and the national and regional humanitarian situation.
Mr Hayad al-Abadi then met with Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, along with Secretary for State Relations Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Vatican said.
