Two people injured in Indonesian embassy blaze

Indonesian embassy on fire

Rome - Only four people were in the Indonesian Embassy to Italy building in the Via Campania when the fire broke out. The first secretary of the embassy was rushed to hospital after he tumbled to the ground after trying to climb down from a 2nd storey window using a curtain as a rope to escape flames racing through his office, firefighters said.

It Is still unknown what caused the fire in the embassy however officials suppose, that there could be short-circuit in the room on the first floor, which has been under renovation.

The first secretary was rushed to the Umberto I hospital.

The embassy cleaning lady was the first person who saw the flames and she tried to extinguish it. When the woman realised that the fire is to strong, she called for help. Firefighters appeared on site in few minutes. One more person was intoxicated by the smoke and taken to the hospital.

"We do not know what sparked the fire, further tests will be needed," said deputy ambassador Des Alwi.

On Thursday firefighters will perform another inspection to try to understand what could have caused such a powerful fire.
