US warns of terrorist attacks in Italy

ROME - The FBI reportedly has warned Italian officials that Islamist terrorists could be plotting attacks on iconic cultural landmarks in Italy, police sources said.

Among the possible targets are St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Milan cathedral and La Scala opera house, it emerged on Thursday. The United States provided Italy with the names of 5 suspect individuals, but the warning, which originated with the Drug Enforcement Agency, was vague as to the timing and location of the possible attacks.

ISIS propaganda has identified Rome and the Vatican as potential targets.

"We ask Allah to support the mujahideen against the agents of idolatry and the crusaders until the flag of the Caliphate is raised over Istanbul and Vatican City,” the latest issue of ISIS magazine Dabiq said.

Hundreds of extra troops have been drafted to patrol the streets of Rome and Milan following last Friday’s terrorist attacks in Paris. Security will be particularly tight in the capital, which is preparing to host a Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis and due to begin on Dec. 8.
