Students protest against elitist education

A sign from today's protest in Rome

ROME — Today, thousands of students, both those at school and at university, are mobilising in dozens of Italian cities to show their disagreement with the policies “which in recent years are dismantling public education but making it more and more elitist and exclusive.”

“We will mobilise to propose a new model of school and university”, explained Alberto Campailla, spokesperson for Link-Coordination University, “that is first of all inclusive for all, regardless of their economic situation. It is for this reason that university students will mobilise to ask for a new university, and especially a new right to education that is truly able to cover the needs of all those who need it.”

“This year the situation is all the more dramatic than usual because of the new method of calculation by ISEE, as a result of which many students will be excluded from the scholarship.”

However, these demonstrations are just the first stage in the process of initiatives both in Rome and throughout Italy. The second event will be on October 16, when a meeting is scheduled between ministers and the CNSU on the emergency ISEE.

The protest took place in Piazza della Repubblica, Rome, at 9 a.m. this morning, as well as in cities such as Naples, Milan, Bologna, Genoa, Turin and Florence.
