British RN warship rescues 400 migrants

ROME – HMS Bulwark, which has been sent to the Mediterranean to assist with the deepening migrant crisis, has rescued 400 migrants, said a spokesperson for the UK Defence Ministry. The British Royal Navy has helped to save over 600 immigrants throughout the course of the last month.

According to local media reports, the migrants were attempting to cross from Libya to Southern Italy in inflatable craft on Tuesday, when they ran into difficulties around 40 miles off the Libyan coastline.

This latest incident underlines increasing European co-operation in dealing with the crisis in the Mediterranean, however a number of politicians have been speaking out against proposals to introduce a quota system in order to divide an estimated 20,000 migrants between European countries.

United Kingdom Home Secretary Theresa May has suggested that Europe shouldn’t allow all the migrants that travel to the continent to stay, as this will encourage others to attempt the “perilous crossing,” of the Mediterranean which has claimed the lives of over 1600 so far. It is for this reason that Mrs. May announced the UK would not back any proposed quota system.
