WFP staffer tests negative for Ebola

ROME --A World Food Programme (WFP) staff member tested negative for Ebola at a Rome hospital Wednesday having felt unwell after returning from Guinea, WFP said.

The UN staff member had two separate tests for Ebola and the results of both were negative.

“We have just been informed by the Italian Ministry of Health that the staff member has tested negative for Ebola,” said the head of WFP’s Medical Service, Dr. Yimei Cao.

“This is obviously a huge relief, but we must remain vigilant and work meticulously to stop the spread of Ebola.” “We recognize that people feel anxious but it is important that we don’t have a case of Ebola going undetected,” said Dr. Cao.

“We are grateful for our close collaboration with the Italian health authorities in so effectively responding, testing and caring for our staff member.” The staff member contacted the Medical Service at WFP headquarters in Rome earlier on Wednesday after feeling unwell, having arrived in Rome on Tuesday.

The member of staff did not have a fever but was taken to hospital for observation and further investigation as a precautionary measure.

The WFP staff member had gone through airport screening processes in two countries and was declared safe to travel before leaving Guinea.

It was the first time that WFP and the Italian Ministry of Health activated an established protocol to protect against the spread of Ebola, WFP said.
