Inheritance row over Sordi’s fortune

Aurelia Sordi, sister of Alberto

ROME – More than 60 relatives could stand to profit from the will of Aurelia Sordi, sister of actor Alberto, after she passed away on Oct 12 at the age of 97.

The beloved actor and director amassed a fortune totalling some 100 million euros, partially in property, before his death in 2003. His funeral in Rome was attended by more than one million mourners, in one of the largest displays of grief the city has ever seen, being surpassed only by the funeral of Pope John Paul II two years later.

The two siblings were extremely close, living together for many years in Via Druso in the centre of Rome. In recent years, Aurelia suffered from increasingly ill health, and was allegedly extorted for money by a group of people close to her, including two lawyers and Alberto’s former chauffeur, Arturo Artadi. Ten people are under investigation for stealing a sum of up to 2.5 million euros.

Conflicting reports surround Aurelia’s will, Ansa states that the money will be left to the foundation which Aurelia founded in memory of her brother, with the intention of turning the house he lived in into a museum. Culture minister Dario Franceschini praised the plan, saying Monday that the house “should become an extraordinary museum.”

However Il Messaggero reported Tuesday morning that the money could be disputed between more than 60 relatives of the siblings.
