'King of Apples’ shot in ambush

CASERTA-An Italian fruit and vegetable businessman known as the ‘King of Apples’ died Wednesday after he was fatally wounded in a shooting off the A1 motorway, police said.

Gennaro Galdiero owed his nickname to frequent appearances on Italian television chat shows as an expert on the fruit and vegetable market in the Campania region.

Police officers said another fruit and vegetable producer and member of the same consortium as the dead entrepreneur had been arrested on charges of murder. According to the police, two men who carried out the ambush Tuesday night are unlikely to be linked to the Camorra mafia operating in the area, as the attack lacked features characteristic of professional killers.
