CASERTA - Police have arrested seven members of the Camorra's Casalesi clan in Caserta on charges of the possession and sale of illegal firearms.
The arrests stem from a July 2010 investigation which found an armoury manager in Santa Maria Capue Vetere in the possession of war weaponry. Police charged the man with illegal possession of war weaponry and seized the armoury. The seizure led investigators to discover that the Camorra was using the armoury to purchase weapons.
Police now have executed arrest warrants for seven men which they found to be in possession of Kalashnikov assault rifles, Uzi machine guns, pistols, and several other weapons with filed off serial numbers. Two of the men have been jailed, which police placed five others under house arrest on Thursday. All seven are said to be members of the Schiavone faction of the Casalesi clan.
The Casalesi clan received global attention in 2006 when it was featured in Roberto Saviano's book Gomorrah, which explored the criminal Casalesi Camorra clan. Signor Saviano now lives under police protection in a secret location.
