Serie A season underway with convincing performances from AS Roma

ROME – On game day two of the 2026/27 Serie A season, AS Roma strengthened their position at the top of the Serie A table with a decisive 4-0 win over Lecce following on from their 4-0 win against Fiorentina.
The Giallorossi are not the only team on six points, with Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus. Atalanta and local rivals Lazio all having six points; however, the Roman side’s goal difference is eight compared to second place Inter’s four.
Five of Roma’s eight goals have come from Donyell Malen, who scored a hattrick against Fiorentina and a brace against Lecce. Dutchman Malen is emerging as the star of the season for Roma and is already pulling ahead in the race for the golden boot, two matches in.
Elsewhere, Como 1907, who qualified for their first ever UEFA Champions League after finishing fourth last season, beat Napoli 1-2 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to send Napoli to tenth place – a shock to Napoli fans after the Partenopei finished in second place last year. Newly promoted Frosinone sit one place above Napoli in ninth, due to a better goal difference, with a 0-1 loss to Juventus and a 3-0 win over Fiorentina.
Fiorentina currently occupy the bottom place with zero points and a goal difference of minus seven. The two other newly promoted teams from Serie B, Monza and Venezia, join the Viola in the relegation zone, both with zero points and goal differences of minus four.
The summer transfer window was full of signings for multiple clubs including Como, who signed on loan both Italian national team striker Moise Kean from Fiorentina and Chelsea’s goalkeeper Roberto Sanchez. Inter signed England breakout star, Djed Spence, after his strong performance at the World Cup, together with John Stones, another England national team defender.
Another Italian national team forward and emerging star, Pio Esposito, renewed his contract with last season’s Scudetto winners Inter, while Roma star Manu Kone renewed his contract with the team in the capital after being blocked from a move to Chelsea. Napoli also signed Man Utd player Rasmus Hojlund permanently, who had played the last season at Napoli on loan.
If AS Roma will remain on top with such strong performances remains to be seen. Standings could still dramatically change, with only two games played and a nearly whole season yet to be contested.
