Homophobia still rampant in Rome as yet another victim viciously beaten

ROME - A vicious attack took place in the centre of Rome, where on Saturday night, 25-year-old Alessandro Ansaldo was targeted and beaten by a group of young men at the end of a party with friends, shouting homophobic insults, spitting and beating. Several passers-by witnessed the beating but did not intervene to help the young man, who suffered various injuries.
Alessandro Ansaldo, who had just returned to the capital after studying in London, was attacked while walking along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II on his way home after attending the party near Piazza Venezia. According to reports, a group of twenty-somethings surrounded him and snatched a fan from his hands, shouting “f***ing b****”. The attackers then beat him with punches and shoves, causing him to suffer head and facial trauma and rib contusions. The 25-year-old is expected to be out of action for at least twenty days.
Several people witnessed the attack and some stopped an ambulance to help Ansaldo, but no one tried to stop the gang's violence. However, someone probably filmed the scene. The young man who was attacked has launched an appeal to recover the footage to give to the police, facilitating the identification process.
