Magnitude 3 earthquake recorded outside Naples

The earthquake occured just outside Naples

NAPLES - At 9:53 p.m. on Thursday, a magnitude 3 earthquake was recorded in the Campi Flegrei area. Seismologists identified the epicentre on the shoreline between Lucrino and Arco Felice, at a depth of 1.9km. The tremor was felt by residents across several towns. In Bacoli and Baia, citizens reported hearing a loud rumble, and the quake was also felt in Bagnoli, Quarto, Monterusciello, Agnano, Monte di Procida, and Cuma.

“The 9:53 p.m. earthquake had a magnitude of 3 at medium depth, south of Montenuovo. It occurred on the edges of the area with the highest uplift around Rione Terra, which has been experiencing seismic activity for some time. We are also monitoring intense hydrothermal activity there,” said Mauro Di Vito, director of the Vesuvius Observatory.

The Campi Flegrei is a highly seismically active area. The Naples office of Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) has recorded 5,742 quakes since the beginning of the year, most of them very low in magnitude. On July 18, a strong 4.0 magnitude quake with an epicentre in the sea off Pozzuoli struck the area and was felt throughout Naples and its province.
