Foreign ministers condemn Israeli military operation in Gaza

ROME —The Foreign Ministers of the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Italy, and New Zealand have issued a joint statement strongly condemning Israel’s decision to launch a new large scale military operation in Gaza, following the Israeli Security Cabinet’s announcement on 8 August.

In the statement, the ministers warned that such action would worsen the already catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the region, jeopardise the safety of hostages, and increase the likelihood of mass displacement among the civilian population.

“The plans announced by the Israeli government risk violating international humanitarian law,” the ministers said, emphasising that any attempt at annexation or expansion of settlements constitutes a breach of international law.

Calling for an urgent and permanent ceasefire, the ministers urged all parties and the international community to take immediate action to bring the ongoing conflict to an end. “What is unfolding in Gaza is the worst case scenario: a famine,” the statement continued. “Massive, immediate, and unhindered humanitarian aid must be delivered without delay.”

The joint statement also demanded that Hamas release all hostages without further delay or preconditions, insisting that they must be treated humanely and protected from cruelty or humiliation.

Addressing the Israeli government directly, the ministers expressed concern over recent changes to the registration system for international humanitarian organisations. “We call on Israel to urgently revise this system to ensure that key humanitarian actors can continue their essential work, in line with humanitarian principles. Excluding them would send a deeply troubling message.”

Reaffirming their commitment to a two-state solution, the ministers concluded by stating that lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians can only be achieved through a negotiated political resolution. This, they noted, must include the complete demilitarisation of Hamas and its exclusion from governance in Gaza, with the Palestinian Authority taking a central role
