King Charles and Queen Camilla continue on their Roman holiday

ROME – Charles and Camilla continued on their state visit to Italy on Wednesday with a visit to the Villa Pamphiji to meet Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, after Camilla’s alleged Tuesday gaffe at the Quirinale palace.

After their arrival on Monday for their four-day state visit, the royal couple experienced a range of pomp and circumstance, as well as various cultural experiences. The red arrows joined their Italian counterparts the Frecce Tricolori for a display above the presidential palace in a symbolic display of parity between the two nations.

The King paid his respects at the newly buffed and polished Alter to the Fatherland, at the base of the Capitoline Hill, to the unknown soldier, laying a large wreath at the monument. The couple then went on towards the Colosseum, where they were awaited distinguished figures such as the minister for culture, Alessandro Giuli and TV Host and Archaeologist, Alberto Angela, as well as by well-wishers in the crowd.

In a novel display, the Honour Guard played hits such as ABBA’s hit song ‘Dancing Queen’ outside of the Colosseum for all to see.

It was reported in some elements of the Italian media that Camilla commited a 'gaffe' at the presidential palace. All events are pre-choreographed and the King and Queen are always briefed prior to ceremonies as to whom the key figures are and where they must stand. Nevertheless, the Queen was seen to be visibly confused as to where to stand, pointing to an empty spot on a rectangular rug before moving to an empty spot next to her husband.
