Pope Francis blesses faithful from hospital window before returning to Vatican for convalescence

Pope Francis at his hospital window Sunday

ROME -- Pope Francis blessed well-wishers from his window at the Gemelli hospital Sunday, making his first public appearance since he was admitted five weeks ago for treatment for double pneumonia and set off fears that he was at death's door. Smiling and speaking somewhat breathlessly, the 88-year-old pontiff waved and gave the thumbs up sign from his wheelchair on the balcony window before returning to the Vatican where he is due to spend two months convalescing.

"I thank you all, greetings to the lady with the yellow flowers," Francis said, speaking in Italian.

Doctors from the team that treated the Argentine pope said Saturday he had twice come close to death during his sojourn at the hospital. His modest suite at the Santa Marta guest house in the Vatican has been adapted to meet his medical needs during convalescence.

In his weekly Angelus address released by the Vatican Francis said he was "saddened" by the resumption of Israeli bombing of civilians in the Gaza Strip and called for it to end.
