Four men arrested for 2010 mayor assassination

Angelo Vassallo

ROME - The Carabinieri have executed four arrest warrants for the murder of the mayor of Pollica, Angelo Vassallo, on Sept. 5 2010, police have said. Vassallo was killed after he was shot by nine times as he drove home from work. The four men who have been arrested under investigation for complicity in murder with the aggravating Camorra are: the colonel of the carabinieri Fabio Cagnazzo, the former brigadier of the Arma Lazzaro Cioffi, the entrepreneur Giuseppe Cipriano (known as "Peppe Odeon", owner of a movie theatre in Scafati) and Romolo Ridosso, considered belonging to the Loreto-Ridosso Camorra clan.

The motive for the crime is believed to be that Vassallo had discovered drug trafficking around the port of Acciaroli, in Salerno, organised by the Camorra clan and was about to report it to the prosecutor’s office of Vallo della Lucania.

The day after the murder the mayor was supposed to meet with an officer from the Agropoli carabinieri.

The investigation was assigned to the District Anti-mafia Directorate of Salerno as from the very beginning it was suspected that the crime had Camorrist implications. ,
