Five Italian tourists injured in Greek motorboat explosion

The owner of the boat has been detained by Greek authorities

ROME -- Five Italian tourists have been injured after a small explosion on a motorboat which was taking them to the Greek island of Rhodes. Port authorities are investigating the incident while the owner of the boat, who was also driving the vehicle, has been detained by Greek police.

The Italians were travelling in the Psaltos region before the small explosion on the vehicle. The tourists then called the Greek coastguard, which intervened along with other private boats in the bay.

The five Italians, who suffered minor burns, were taken to a clinic in the Agios Pavlos area for treatment. A sixth passenger, who was not seriously injured, disembarked in the Lindos bay region.

Authorities believe the small explosion could have been caused by a loss of fuel, but investigations are still underway.
