Polish tourist killed in hit-and-run in Palermo

ROME -- A Polish tourist was killed during a hit-and-run in Palermo, according to local police reports.
The incident took place on Corso Tukory, a central street in the city, when the woman and her husband were crossing the road close to the central station. Following the collision, the driver fled the scene, only handing himself in in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Emergency services arrived at the scene, where the victim, Patrycja Bartosik Weder, 31, was pronounced dead. Police began searching for the Smart car, but the driver, currently named as Alfonso T., handed himself in during the early hours of Sunday.
The driver tested positive for alcohol, slightly exceeding the threshold of 0.5 per cent. “But it was a test that was carried out at 09:45 this morning,” explained the police department, “and so it is presumable to think that last night at 2 a.m., when the incident occurred, that it would’ve been higher. It will all be reported in the court records.”
