Artwork in support of detained Salis appears near Hungarian Embassy

Laika's artwork of Ilaria Salis

ROME - New street art depicting detained Ilaria Salis has appeared near the Hungarian Embassy in Rome, as outrage continues over the Italian’s treatment by Hungarian authorities.

The artwork which appeared overnight can be found at the intersection of via dei Villini and via Malpighi. It depicts Salis breaking free from her chains, by which she was dragged into a Budapest courtroom. Written on her dress are the words “Ilaria resists.”

Laika, the responsible artist, criticised footage from the Budapest courtroom, saying “this is a violation of human rights by [an EU] member state.” Laika urged others not to remain silent and said she was “proud to support Ilaria, as an activist and an antifascist.”

This comes after the Hungarian Ambassador was summoned by the Foreign Ministry to answer questioning about the treatment of Salis.

President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa spoke to Rai3 on Wednesday, saying that “it is right to intervene” in this case, and that the sentence seemed “excessive.”

ANSA reported that Giorgia Meloni spoke to Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban in a phone call on Tuesday night. Meloni aimed to make Orban aware of Salis’s treatment, while respecting the autonomy of Hungary’s judiciary.
