Cost of making pizza up 30 percent in a year

ROME- Inflation has staggered this year in Italy, and the country's famous food dishes are not immune. Specifically the pizza, arguably Italy’s most iconic dish, has seen a price increase of 30 percent, according to Bloomberg agency, which is triple the rate of inflation.

The increasing price of the dish is mainly due to the rise in cost of the basic four ingredients. The price of a mozzarella has increased by 27 percent, flour has increased by 22 percent, olive oil by 13 percent and tomatoes by 10 percent. However it is the price of electricity that has mainly caused an increase of the price as it has gone up an alarming 174 percent. The price of ready-made pizzas in the supermarket has increased only 10 percent compared to the 30 percent increase of the trattoria-made pizzas due to the lack of electricity used in making them, however supermarket pizzas are significantly less tasty and much less of a staple within the country.

Pizza has been historically known in Italy as a working-class meal, affordable, tasty and quick to consume. The increase in price of the iconic dish signals that the price of basic goods and consumptions are quickly on the rise in Italy and that inflation is affecting every part of daily life for Italian families.
