Arsenal footballer injured in mass stabbing to undergo surgery

MILAN – A mass stabbing in a supermarket outside Milan killed one person and injured several, including Arsenal football player Pablo Marí who was to undergo surgery, doctors said.
A cashier died and at least five other people were also wounded on Thursday evening when a man started stabbing people at a Carrefour supermarket in the town of Assago, near Milan. Luis Fernando Ruggieri, a 46 year-old originally from Bolivia who worked in the Carrefour, died from his injuries while being taken to hospital.
Pablo Marí, a Spanish defender currently on loan at AC Monza, was stabbed in the back during the attack. He is conscious and his condition is understood to be stable.
Terrorist motivations were ruled out by investigators; the aggressor suffered from serious mental health problem and for the last year had been receiving treatment for severe depressive episodes. It was reported that the 46 year-old suspect grabbed a knife from the supermarket shelves before attacking people at random.
The attacker was detained by several customers, one of whom was former Napoli defender Massimo Tarantino.
When arrested, the suspect reportedly began to shout nonsensical phrases, further evidence of his unstable mental state. He was treated for self-inflicted wounds and is currently being held in a psychiatric hospital. He is accused of homicide and attempted multiple homicide. The identity of the attacker was not disclosed.
