ROME – The Italian public broadcaster Rai News 24 ran its first daily news programme in Ukrainian on Saturday, in service of refugees in Italy and in other European countries, wrote il Fatto Quotidiano.
The five-minute-long news roundup will be broadcast every day in Ukrainian at 3 p.m. It will relay information about the war taking place in Ukraine and updates on the international reponses to the conflict, using the latest reports from journalists in the field and the foreign editorial office.
Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luigi Di Maio called it a “useful initiative for refugees," adding that Ukrainians “are welcome in our country."
Di Maio explained, “at the moment we are doing our best to support the government of Kiev and the Ukrainian people that have stayed in Ukraine, to achieve peace through diplomacy as soon as possible.” The minister also said that Italy will offer help to rebuild Ukraine once the war is over.
Chief executive officer of Rai, Carlo Fuortes, said that the decision to create an information program in Ukrainian responds to a new public need. In this way, the television channel, which, as the name suggests, provides news 24 hours a day, is continuing to provide "an essential contribution to understanding reality," and credited the work of correspondents and journalists from editorial offices Tg1, Tg2, and Tg3.
According to Di Maio about 70,000 Ukrainian refugees have already arrived in Italy and 90 percent of these are women and children.
