Investigation launched into boy's death after sushi lunch

Luca Piscopo

NAPLES – A doctor and a restaurant owner are under investigation for manslaughter after a 15-year-old boy died 10 days after suffering symptoms of food poisoning following lunch at a sushi bar in the city, police said.

The boy, Luca Piscopo, went for lunch at the ‘all-you-can-eat’ style restaurant in the Vomero district with his three friends on Nov. 23. Shortly afterwards, he started vomiting and had a high fever. He went to see his GP, who gave him anti-inflammatories to take at home. After a slight improvement, on Dec. 2, the young man died.

The 61-year-old doctor, who has not been identified, is criticised for not having recognised the cause of the young man’s symptoms, which was possibly infection by the salmonella bacterium. The Chinese restaurant owner is also being investigated.

Piscopo was good at school and loved football, being a keen supporter of his home team, Naples. A banner saying ‘Hi little Luca’ was put up at the Maradona stadium in Naples on Dec. 3, the day of a home match against Atlanta, in his memory.
