Criminal slain during Euro revelry

SAN SEVERO - While the rest of Italy was celebrating the success of the Azzurri at the Euros, a 42-year-old man was shot and killed in a road ambush and his six-year-old nephew gravely injured.

Matteo Anastasio, a convicted criminal, was shot at least four times in the neck and chest by a 7.65 calibre pistol, and died on arrival at the Riuniti hospital in Foggia. His nephew was also hit and was taken to hospital, where he was put into a medically induced coma, while the doctors tried to resuscitate him. He is in a critical condition, but stable.

They were driving on a scooter down viale Matteotti in San Severo when they were flanked by two people on a motorbike wearing helmets covering their face, who shot at them. Police are treating this as a mafia killing, exploiting the ongoing national celebrations to kill him on the streets.

In 2017 Matteo's brother, Giuseppe Anastasio, also known as U Latton, was killed in circumstances relating to a "settling of accounts" and drug dealing territory, according to the police investigation. Giuseppe had previously been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the accidental murder of a 12-year-old girl, the daughter of a farmer, in June 2002, when he had been shooting at a rival.

The police did not believe, however, that his February 2017 murder was related to this crime, as he had already served his time, and his family had expressed no intent on revenge.
