Milan beat Atalanta to steal second on last day of season

Franck Kessie slots home one of his two penalties

ROME - It all came down to the final day of this year’s Serie A, as AC Milan managed to steal second place from Atalanta, after beating them 2-0. Napoli’s 1-1 to Verona wasn’t enough to hold on to their Champions League spot, allowing Juventus to sneak into fourth after beating Bologna 4-1.

Meanwhile champions Inter Milan signed off in style with a 5-1 victory over Udinese, amid wild celebrations outside the stadium where fans had gathered to cheer the arrival of the team. Celebrations also for the return of fans, with 1,000 allowed inside the stadium.

AC Milan, who haven’t qualified for the Champions League since 2013, spent much of the match defending, with Atalanta having 79 percent of the possession, and only looked threatening on the counter attack. However, they managed to make good use of the little ball they had, winning two penalties, both converted by the Ivorian Franck Kessie, in the 43rd and 93rd minute.

Juventus’s 4-1 victory to Bologna started very well for the visiting side when Federico Chiesa scored Juve’s first goal in only the sixth minute, bouncing on Adrien Rabiot’s shot which had deflected off the cross bar. Juve’s second came in the 28th minute, Paulo Dybala skilfully driving into the box and dinking over the keeper for Alvaro Morata to head it in.

The bianconeri made it three on the 45 minute mark when France’s Rabiot calmly slotted the ball past the keeper, assisted by silky one touch passing by Chiesa and Dejan Kulusevski in the build up. Morata then gave Juve a four goal advantage in the opening minutes of the second half when a long ball from Juve’s keeper Wojciech Szczesny brought him through on goal, managing to find the back of the net after a sublime touch to bring the ball under control  on the turn.

It didn’t end a complete disaster for Bologna, who secured a consolation goal in the 85th minute through Riccardo Orsolini.

Roma’s season, didn’t finish quite as well, with a 2-2 draw to 15th place Spezia. After Roma gave the ball away in their own half in the fifth minute, Daniele Verde provided a clinical finish to give the home side an early lead, which Tommaso Pobega doubled in the 38th minute with a tap in from a corner.

However, Roma started the fight back in the second half with a Stephan El Shaarawy goal set up by a poor clearance in the box by Spezia’s Claudio Terzi. The equaliser then came in the 85th minute after Henrikh Mkhitaryan tapped in a Edin Dzeko header from a Bryan Cristante cross.
