PM decree expected on region movement and later curfew

ROME - In preparation for Wednesday’s Prime Ministerial decree, Tuesday will see meetings with the Scientific Technical Committee (CTS) and discussion with the regions, as the government plans the strategy for the reopening of the country.

Given the current data on coronavirus cases and deaths throughout Italy, 11 regions and the provinces of Trento and Bolzano are expected to move into the yellow zone in the coming days.

In making these decisions, Italian Prime Minister has been facing pressure from the centre-right to push back the curfew and open bars and restaurants indoors in yellow zones, as well as requests from many of the regions to review the decision to send children back to school, political sources say.

The League is planning to present its proposal for an extension of the curfew to 11 p.m. from April 26. “We will ask [for support] from most of the regions and mayors, regardless of political colours,” said Matteo Salvini, the League’s leader. “It is not a request from the League or from Salvini, but it is founded on the improving scientific data and common sense.”

Tuesday’s governmental meeting with the CTS will discuss the future of movement between regions, with it looking likely that possibilities will open up in the lighter zones, the self-declaration document no longer needed.

An announcement is also expected on the implementation of some kind of app, identification card or paper certificate - as is being discussed in many European countries - to be brought wherever one travels this summer, which will show one's vaccination status, as well as any other relevant information, including tests and movement, to be produced on request, allowing movement throughout Europe.
