First female 'vigile' on historic Piazza Venezia podium

ROME - A female police officer, Cristina Corbucci, has for the first time stepped onto the historic platform of Piazza Venezia. It was the commander of the 'vigili', Ugo Angeloni, who decided to reject the male dominated tradition of the post, under the famous Altare della Patria.

"It is a great respoonsibility," Corbucci said. "Until a few years ago I would never have dreamt of being a traffic cop, I applied for a few other roles, other than the local police, but when I thought of leaving the uniform, I realised that I enjoyed the work. We talk with a lot of people, people smile, women are happy when they pass and there is a feminine solidarity and they encourage me."
