ROME - Plans of urban development have sparked controversy in the Arbizzano area of the Valpolicella town of Negrar. Opponents to the plans claim that the development will "destroy the town," as the plans incorporate areas which hold historical and cultural importance.

ROME - The US Ambassador to UN agencies in Rome, David J Lane, has criticised the FAO as a "poster child of UN corruption" at a discussion on the global food crisis. 
 
In his address to a group of multinational students at the American University of Rome, the ambassador discussed the challenges and achievements in food security initiatives. When asked about FAO missions, the ambassador responded that the FAO needs to readjust its focus on rural poverty and likened it to the "poster child of UN corruption."

LONDON -- Global markets have fallen into the red as a US government shutdown looms and a fresh political crisis in Italy threatens more Eurozone turmoil.

 Republicans and Democrats in Washington remain at an impasse over the budget, meaning many government staff will be put on unpaid leave and services slashed from midnight in the US. The warring politicians have also made no progress on raising the debt limit by the October 17 deadline which could spark a potentially disastrous debt default by the world's biggest economy.

ROME–MEP Struan Stevenson slammed Europe's Commission for disregard of Italy's discrimination against UK lecturers -  lawyers said Brussels “relinquishes its essential role of overseeing EU law."

 “The result, illogical and self-contradictory, is that the Commission has made its own initiative in respect of a Member State’s conference to Community law subordinate to the judgement of that State’s own domestic jurisprudence,” Prof. Lorenzo Picotti, professor of Criminal Law and Computer Crime at the University of Verona, said in a statement.

ROME - Turkish Ambassador to Italy, Hakki Akil, opened a conference today by praising cooperation between Sapienza University and Bahçeşehir University.
 
The conference, Economy and Culture in the Republic of Turkey: the pedagogical model and Italy's role, focused on the economic and cultural relationships between Italy and Turkey. It featured lectures throughout the day presented by nine scholars from various universities in both countries.
