ROME– Colleagues of Mario Lubetkin have launched a “witch hunt” to find the source of leaks about his alleged fast-track hire to head the FAO communications division, IPS sources say.

“They are desperately looking for culprits and spreading fear, blaming leaks for any further staff reductions,” a source at the Inter Press Service told Insider, asking not to be named. “There are warnings of smear campaigns from former staffers who are resentful, revenge-thirsty ‘traitors,’ jealous of Lubetkin's success,” the source added-

ROME – Chilean Samuel Varas, an associate of FAO DG Jose da Silva Graziano, has been hired as interim IT chief operating officer at the agency, bypassing normal UN procedures, FAO sources say.

Varas’s comfortable dlrs 20,000 a month plus emoluments D1 appointment was disclosed in a recent email by FAO CIO Florentin Albu. “There was no competitive recruitment for this,” a veteran FAO watcher commented.

“The ‘ad-interim’ is the loophole. It will also allow Varas to assume Albu’s role once Albu goes in August when his contract expires.”

Since Senor Lubetkin left the agency last month for a cushy dlrs 25,000 a month sinecure at the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, IPS “is conducting an external evaluation process, at the request of ‘one candidate’ to the post of DG of IPS,” a well-placed source told Italian Insider. “The process is classified, let alone its conclusions.”
