 ROME -- Serie A side and Europa League winners Atalanta were beaten by Real Madrid as Kylian Mbappé inspired the Spanish side to victory in the UEFA Super Cup.

 Gian Piero Gasperini’s team had defended resolutely in the first half at the Stadion Narodowy and had done well to contain a star-studded Real Madrid lineup. But the deadlock was broken after 59 minutes when Vinicius Junior weaved a run through the Atalanta back line and squared to Federico Valverde to tap in.

 ROME -- Giovanni La Lia, 70, founder of one of the first Forza Italia associations in Italy, has been placed under investigation in connection to phone calls made around the time of the 1992 and 1993 Cosa Nostra attacks. La Lia is under investigation for providing false police statements, Florence’s public prosecutor has said.

 ROME -- The non-governmental association SOS Humanity has criticised Italian authorities after only allowing 70 migrants to disembark in Lampedusa on Monday, leaving the other 200 rescued by the NGO stuck on the boat and facing a 1200-kilometre journey to Genoa. Italian authorities have violated human rights, Mirka Schäfer, a spokesperson of SOS Humanity, has said.

 ROME -- The Italian government has been widely criticised after not sending any representative to a commemoration marking 80 years since the Nazi fascist massacre in Sant’Anna di Stazzema, Tuscany. Eugenio Giani, the President of Tuscany and representative of the Democratic Party, said “he would have expected much better.”

ROME -- Two families were evacuated on Monday evening as another fire broke out in Rome. The fire has since been put out and there is no immediate danger, the mayor of Artena has said.

 The blaze swept through the province of Artena, in the southeast of the capital, around 5:00 p.m. on Monday, as fire services worked throughout the night to put the fire out. Two families living close to the blazes were evacuated as a precaution.
