 ROME -- An investigation has been opened into potential malice which caused a large scale fire in the city on Wednesday afternoon, injuring four emergency workers, Rome's public prosecutor's office has said.

 One firefighter and three members of the civil protection agency were taken to hospital on Wednesday afternoon in a serious condition after attempting to put out a fire in Rome’s Cinecittà est and Torre Spaccata neighbourhoods. Three are being treated in Rome’s major burns unit at Sant’Eugenio Hospital while the other is in intensive care, Il Fatto Quotidiano has reported.

 ROME -- Investigations are ongoing to understand why a plane travelling from Corfu to London Gatwick was forced to emergency land in Rome. Two flight attendants were injured but received medical assistance at Roma Fiumicino airport, easyJet has said.

 The Airbus A320 was travelling to London Gatwick on Monday afternoon when it encountered turbulence in Italian airspace at around 1:00 p.m. The pilot subsequently decided to emergency land the plane in Rome.

 ROME -- More than 1000 migrants are presumed dead since January 2024 while crossing the Mediterranean, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has confirmed.

 In figures released on Wednesday by the IOM, a UN agency, 421 migrants have died crossing the Mediterranean and 603 people are missing and presumed drowned in the period between the start of the year and August 17. Over 13,000 people have been picked up in the waters and taken back to Libya, the data also confirms.

 ROME -- The British tycoon Mike Lynch is among five people reported to be dead in the search for missing passengers after the sinking of a luxury yacht, the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported Wednesday. Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and Chris Morvillo are the two other bodies to have been identified, La Repubblica has reported.

 Five bodies have been found by rescue teams on Wednesday afternoon, on the third day of operations since the yacht sank off the coast of Palermo on Monday.

 ROME -- The search has resumed for a second day to find the missing passengers, including four British tourists, of a luxury yacht which sank off the coast of Palermo on Monday morning. Divers are facing “considerable difficulties” in finding the missing tourists, Luca Cari, spokesperson for Italy’s fire service, has said.
