Covid cases hit new post lockdown high in Italy

ROME – The number of new positive cases of the Coronavirus rose to 1,367 in Italy on Wednesday, with a record 93,000 tests carried out in 24 hours.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, there was also an increase of 13 in the number of people to die from the virus. This new increase came after there was a downturn on Tuesday with 878 new positives, although caveated by the 21,000 more swabs taken Wednesday.

The large uptake in the amount of tests being done in Italy is related to the new measures for those returning to the country from abroad or stricter testing regulations at ports, train and airport terminals. Particularly, indicative statistics show that 45 per cent of new positive cases in the region of Lazio are connected to those returning from Sardinia, where there have been significant high profile outbreaks. Meanwhile in Lombardy it is estimated that around two thirds of new cases are linked to those people re-entering the country from abroad.

Lombardy was the region with the most new cases, at 269, while Lazio registered 162. Valle d’Aosta is the only region to have not declared a single new positive case of Coronavirus.
