NAPLES – A 28-year-old hospitalised with a suspected case of coronavirus does not have the disease, Italian media report.

The unnamed tourist is from China’s Hubei province, where the virus first broke out in the capital Wuhan. He has been in Italy for seven days and was hospitalised Tuesday.

The case was confirmed as negative.

Samples were sent to the Lazzaro Spallanzani institute of infectious diseases in Rome for analysis and where tests proved he did not have the illness.

The man arrived at the Pellegrini hospital Tuesday morning and after just under two hours of tests was rushed to Naples’ Cotugno hospital by ambulance, Il Mattino said. The Cotugno is a specialist hospital for the treatment of infectious diseases.

Tests for other causes of his symptoms, such as pneumonia and Sars virus, have produced negative results.

The man was on his honeymoon and his wife has been hospitalised as a preventative measure, while another couple they were travelling with have also been subject to medical precautions, Il Mattino reports.

A meeting of local and health authorities at the time of the hospitalisation stressed the need for people to avoid alarmism and false rumours, La Repubblica said.
