MILANO MARITTIMA, Ravenna – A video showing the son of Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini enjoying a ride on a police jet-ski at Milano Marittima beach has caused the League leader embarrassment, forcing him to apologise.

“My mistake, from dad, no responsibility should be given to the police,” Mr Salvini said.

The episode unfolded when a Repubblica videographer noticed that the Interior Minister, after posing for a photo with two agents, gave the thumbs up for his son to board a State police water vehicle, used to maintain security on the Romagna coast.

Two men approached the videographer, advised him they were policemen and tried to stop him from filming.

“Either you lower it, or we’ll take it (the camera) from you,” can be heard in the video.

The journalist voices his objection saying he is on a beach and wants to film a scene in a public place.

“It’s a police vehicle, don’t get us into trouble,” the men responded, citing “privacy” reasons.

The reporter asked the pair who was on board the jet-ski.

  “A colleague,” they said.

 “With who?” the reporter asked.

 “Alone,” they responded.

The journalist repeated the question only to be given the same answer.

The nervous duo followed the reporter all morning trying to obscure his view by putting themselves in front of the camera.

Eventually the two ‘policemen’ changed their story, “We never said we were policemen, if you come with me I’ll let you know who I am.”

The Democratic Party didn’t mince words over the incident.

“A toy. Here’s how he handles law enforcement. First he uses the uniforms of Carabinieri and police like they were health sweaters, in spite of the law and now this,” Democratic Party Deputy Giuditta Pini wrote.

“If I were in the shoes of a person who earns 1,300 euros a month putting my life at risk to guarantee the safety of citizens, I would be really pissed off.”

While the Democratic Party’s Alessia Morani highlighted the silence from the M5S camp.

“If instead of the son of Salvini it were a politician from the Democratic Party, it’s certain that Five Stars would have fought like hell,” she said.

“Do they have anything to say about the episode today or the fear of losing their seat is powerful enough to silence them?”

The Ravenna Police Headquarters is conducting investigations into improper use of public administration vehicles.
