MILAN – A delegation from the Community of Sant’Egidio, with president Marco Impagliazzo, went on Monday to Binario 21 to pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust.

In recent years, the Holocaust memorial in Milan Central Station has become a place of welcome for many migrants and refugees as they travel to northern Europe, thanks to the collaboration of the Jewish Community and the Community of Sant’Egidio.

“The memory of the Holocaust will always be an antidote to antisemitism, and a warning to resist strongly the spread of xenophobic and racist words and actions,” said Marco Impagliazzo.

Binario 21 was an underground platform where Jewish prisoners were loaded onto trains to be transported to concentration camps between 1943 and 1945. Long forgotten and rediscovered in 1995, the memorial there was inaugurated in 2013. It is the only European site involved in the deportations which remains intact.
