ROME - An 18 year-old girl set herself on fire in a square in Vado Ligure, a town near Savona, Il Fatto Quotidiano reports. Paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene imminently. Over half of her body has been severely burned, however she is reportedly still alive.

The girl’s father committed suicide in 2013 in the very same way, in the very same square. His act was allegedly motivated by economic concerns and health problems. Before setting herself alight, the teenager didn’t leave a note or explanation for her act.

The Savona state police arrived at the scene, and listened to witness accounts of the incident. They collected all footage recorded by surveillance cameras nearby.

Shortly after the 2013 general election, her father had appeared at Beppe Grillo’s doorstep and rang his intercom demanding for help. He was running a small business at the time. On Feb. 26, he spoke with the founder of the Five Star Movement, who had mentioned him in a meeting in Avellino. He said, “there is a man in great financial difficulty, who called 118 the day after the general election, saying he was going to kill himself at my house because he could no longer work. All hell broke loose, the police arrived at my home..."

The man committed suicide on May 17, 2013. He poured a tank of petrol over himself and set himself alight.
