ROME - To the dismay of tourists and residents alike, Barberini metro station has become an 'exit-only' stop, and Spagna remains closed. The two metropolitan line A stations closed on Tuesday due to a technical failure, leaving the city centre "deserted." Reppublica station has been closed since Oct. 23, following the collapse of one of its escalators.

Only two central metro stations are functioning as normal: Termini and Flaminio.

In a statement released Wednesday, Atac announced, “Atac has given priority to technical works, needed to refurbish Spagna and Barberini metro stations, which have been closed since yesterday morning. The operation is well underway at the moment. The works will be completed in as little time as possible. Buses will be in action in the meantime, and a service has been set up which links Flaminio and Termini. Atac apologises for the disruption.”
