Christian martyrs remembered at Sant’Egidio Service

ROME – A vigil of ecumenical prayer was to take place on March 27 at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. The service was to remember the names and stories of persecuted Christians, many of whom were killed on account of their loyalty to the Gospel.

The Service touches upon how peaceful prayer is often taken for granted, highlighting the persecution, discrimination, deprivation of religious freedom across the globe, whilst focussing around the words of Pope Francis: “Today, in the 21st century, our Church is a Church of martyrs”.

Celebrating Mass in many countries is an entirely different affair to its celebration in Italy. In certain areas, churches and Christian schools are burned down whilst teachers are threatened, intimidated or even killed if they attempt to educate the younger generation. The Community of Sant’Egidio looks back 38 years, pondering in remembrance on the life of Oscar Romero, who was killed while celebrating Eucharist.

The vigil of ecumenical prayer was to be held this Tuesday at 18.30 at the Basilica of Santa Maria, presided over by Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops.
